Climate change poses new challenges for Latin America, Africa, Asia, and much of Oceania. New technologies designed to mitigate the planet-wide impacts are reshaping the role of natural resources, agricultural exports, and renewable energy potential in these regions. We conduct research to enable countries across the Global South to integrate more effectively into these new economic dynamics. We aim to transform the challenges of this transition into opportunities for sustainable development.
In the face of the environmental crisis—marked by a sustained rise in temperatures—new domestic and international regulations are emerging that are transforming production and consumption patterns. Developing economies face significant barriers in adapting to these changes.
We work to ensure that these new regulations do not exacerbate structural asymmetries. Developing economies vary greatly from one another. Alliances among Global South nations could be the key to increasing their influence in the international arena.
The growth of energy sectors—driven by environmental and market demands—requires vast quantities of minerals. The Global South holds a significant share of the minerals critical to this transition. Amidst the environmental challenges associated with their extraction, new opportunities are emerging for the region’s long-overdue sustainable development.
We are working to ensure that these minerals—crucial to the functioning of these new value chains—play a central role in the economic development of countries in the Global South. We aim to foster an ambitious integration into strategic markets, thereby generating added value, promoting local development, and avoiding new forms of dependency.
Energy lies at the heart of the transition. Low-emission sources are key to tackling climate change. Renewable energy sources are challenging the position of fossil fuels. It is no longer merely an environmental issue; it is also a matter of the market.
We work to ensure that the energy transition acts as a driver of sustainable development for economies in the Global South. We aim to help overcome barriers such as limited access to financing, weak local capacities, and gaps in workforce training.
We work to ensure that the global transition sustains life while simultaneously improving living conditions in a more equitable way. We believe this challenge is greater than any single country, continent, or division between the Global North and South. It transcends any single perspective, flag, or organization. We believe that environment and development go hand in hand. The time is now.
